Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

Marsden High School is adapting to the changing world of work. The embedding of technology into teaching and learning is a key aspect of schools preparing students.

Teachers are ensuring there is much more 'real time' formative assessment in class. This is being achieved through the use of technology such as quick quizzes online and so on, with real time feedback to the teacher and student. This should feature at the start of almost every lesson.

As young people approach driving age it is important they and their parents/carers are aware of what to expect as a Learner driver, and how to achieve the 120 supervised driving hours in their logbook.

In conjunctions with the Roads and Maritime Service (RMS), the City of Ryde is holding a free two-hour workshop on the evening of Wednesday 14 March, 2018.

This workshop offers practical advice and information to parents/carers and supervisors on how to help Learner drivers become safer drivers. We also recommend that the Learner driver attend.

The workshop will provide information about:

The Safer Drivers Course
Understanding the Graduated licensing Scheme and the current laws of L and P licence holders.
Handy hints for completing the Learner Driver Log Book.
Understanding the benefits of supervised on-road driving experience.
Tips for supervising Learner drivers.
Young driver issues.

Attention Parents and Carers

A child attending Marsden High School has been diagnosed with Chickenpox.

What are the symptoms? - Chickenpox begins with a sudden onset of slight fever, runny nose, feeling generally unwell and a skin rash. The rash usually begins as small lumps that turn into blisters and then scabs. The rash appears over three to four days. At any one time, the lesions of the rash vary in stages of development. Symptoms usually occur two weeks after exposure to the virus. Most people recover without complications, but sometimes the infection can lead to serious complications, such as pneumonia and inflammation of the brain. Rarely, the infection can be fatal. Persons who are previously vaccinated can still get chickenpox. If chickenpox occurs in a vaccinated person it is usually mild and less contagious than in an unvaccinated person.

How is it spread? - Early in the illness, the virus is spread by coughing. Later in the illness, the virus is spread by direct contact with the fluid in the blisters. The infection is highly contagious to people who have never had chickenpox or who have not been vaccinated. People are infectious from one or two days before the rash appears (that is, during the runny nose phase) and up to five days after (when the blisters have formed crusts or scabs) Chickenpox infection triggers an immune response and people rarely get chickenpox twice.

What should parents do? - People with chickenpox should avoid others (and not attend childcare or school) until at least five days after onset of the rash and all the blisters have dried. People with chickenpox should cover the nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, dispose of soiled tissues, wash their hands well and not share eating utensils, food or drinking cups. Pregnant women should avoid anyone with chickenpox or shingles and should see their doctor if they have been around someone with these illnesses. Most cases can be diagnosed based on the symptoms and by appearance of the rash. Sometimes the diagnosis is confirmed by testing samples taken from the rash or from blood.

Driving and Parking Safely Near our School

The beginning and end of the school day are busy times for pedestrians and drivers outside schools.

You can help keep children safe by remembering the following:

drop your child off and pick them up on the school side of the road
never call out to them from across the road - it is very dangerous
always take extra care in 40km school zones
follow all parking signs - these help keep your child as safe as possible
park responsibly even if it means you have to walk further to the school gate
never double park - it is illegal and puts children at risk
never do a U-turn or a three point turn outside the school as it puts children at risk of harm
model safe and considerate pedestrian and driver behaviours to your child
always give way to pedestrians particularly when entering and leaving driveways.

To help schools keep the school zone safer for all pedestrians and drivers there are seven new traffic offences with new fines.

None of the seven offences attract demerit points when committed elsewhere on the road but now in a school zone they each come with two points.

The changes are:

1. Stopping in intersection - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a penalty of $439 and 2 demerit points.

2. Stop within 20m of intersection (traffic lights) - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a penalty of $439 and 2 demerit points.

3. Stop within 10m of intersection (no traffic lights) - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a penalty of $439 and 2 demerit points.

4. Stop near bicycle crossing lights - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a penalty of $439 and 2 demerit points.

5. Obstruct access to ramp/path/passageway - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a penalty of $330 and 2 demerit points.

6. Not parallel park in the direction of travel - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a $330 fine and 2 demerit points.

7. Parallel park close to dividing line - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a $330 fine and 2 demerit points.

Talented Marsden High School students headed to Spain to compete in the Mediterranean International

Talented Marsden High School students headed to Spain to compete in the Mediterranean International Cup.

After being selected to represent the FBC Escola Youth Academy, Pedro, Deniz and Jamie will be afforded the opportunity to play football with some of the best youth football players and coaches from around the world in March, 2018.

This highly acclaimed competition showcases more than 280 international teams, more than 6000 accredited competitors, over 20,000 spectators and is live-streamed for all to watch.

The boys are however required to self-fund their travel costs including airfares, accommodation, meals, match costs and more, so in order to raise the funds needed Pedro, Deniz and Jamie have set up their own crowd funding campaign to help ease the costs involved in getting to Spain and would truly appreciate your support. Response to national media on youth suicide:

Over the past week there has been extensive coverage across all Australian media on the passing of Amy ‘Dolly' Everett, a 14-year-old girl from Katherine NT, who tragically died by suicide. Dolly's death is a deeply tragic event and our thoughts are with her family, friends and the affected communities.

Behind the scenes, Headspace has been working directly with key health, mental health, media and education stakeholders in the Northern Territory and in Queensland to assist in the response to this tragic event.

Headspace is the National Youth Mental Health Foundation and provide early intervention mental health services to 12-25 year olds, along with assistance in promoting young peoples' wellbeing, They provide support and services for mental health, physical health, work and study support and alcohol and other drug services and have a wealth of information and useful resources on their website.

One resource that may be particularly important in the wake of this tragedy, is the article on 'How to talk about suicide with young people' and the following if a brief excerpt from the article.

When a suicide occurs, it is a traumatic event for a school or community and the impact on young people can be significant. Suicide can elicit a range of emotional and behavioural responses. These will be unique for each individual and will depend on factors such as past experiences, level of support, personality type and how close a student was to the deceased person. Talking to young people about suicide can feel daunting. Many people fear it will cause increased distress or even lead to the development of suicidal thoughts or suicide ‘contagion' (see headspace fact sheet on Suicide Contagion). It's important to be thoughtful and sensitive when you talk to young people about suicide. The aim is to limit the harmful impact of the death and to promote positive coping strategies and good mental health. Below are some important factors to keep in mind.

1. Give accurate information about why people suicide
2. Avoid blame
3. Don't focus on the method of suicide
4. Address feelings such as anger and responsibility
5. Encourage help-seeking
6. Ask about suicidal thoughts

If you believe that a young person is at risk of suicide, you should seek professional support from your local mental health service or emergency department and keep the young person safe until help arrives. Remove any means of suicide available to them in the immediate vicinity, such as medications or weapons. Stay with him or her (or arrange for supervision) until they can be seen and assessed.

Over the holidays I was offered a permanent appointment at a High School in Western Sydney. Whilst this is great news, I am also very sad that I am leaving Marsden without the opportunity to say farewell to staff and students.

I would like to thank all students I have worked with at Marsden over the past three years who have made my time at school enjoyable and rewarding. To all the students I have taught, coached, taken on camp or even just had a chat to, you have made Marsden a hard place to beat! I hope that you each continue to excel in all areas of school, that 2018 is a great year and you continue to make your parents and teachers proud. Year 11 Crossroads Camp, Year 7 2016 Camp, Netball Gala days, the start of Dance at MHS and Beach Touch are aspects of Marsden i will never forget. Thank you for creating these memories with me.

HSC Results are in for our Class of 2017

The results are in and congratulations are in order ...

The HSC results for Marsden were released this morning and needless to say, we are really proud of our Year 12, 2017 cohort:

9% of the individual results were Band 6 (90 – 100)
28% of the individual results were Band 5 (80 – 89)
33% of the individual results were Band 4 (70 – 79)

70% of our student's individual results were either Band 4, 5 or 6 which is a 5% increase on last year's results. Whilst we did stagnate at 9% for individual results across Band 6 (equal to last year), we achieved 28% of individual results in Band 5 showing a 5% an increase when compared to last year. Further good news is that 19% of student's individual results were Band 3, which is an 8% decrease on last year. However, there is always room for a little improvement and the area we still need to work on is the 11% of individual results across Bands 1 and 2.

Overall the results are amazing and we are delighted with our students' achievements. They show significant improvement over 2016 and 2015, where we achieved 55% of individual results greater than Band 4. Since 2015 we have improved by an impressive 15%, moving the middle results upwards so that now 70% of individual results are Bands 4, 5 or 6.

We will be sure to update you on individual results once we receive our students ATAR rankings tomorrow.

This is the first event for the 2018 Prefect team and will include a whole school assembly where Police Constable Deb Crystal will be presenting about the impact of Domestic Violence. As I sit in front of my computer writing this it's hard to imagine that this time has come. I began at Marsden in Term 4 2010 as Head Teacher PDHPE and have watched our fabulous school flourish and produce outstanding young men and women that any school would be proud to be acquainted with. If you haven't already guessed, I'd like to take this opportunity to inform the Marsden community that this Friday will be my last day at Marsden High School as I take up a Deputy Principal role at Colo High School.

I am truly grateful to have worked at such a great school where the students take so much pride in their own learning and understand the importance of "life experience". Each and every one of you, both past and present make Marsden such a diverse, successful and great school. I am extremely proud to be able to say that I was part of the "Marsden Experience".

I'd like to thank the students, parents and wider community for your support, advice, encouragement and participation in the education of 'our future'. S3 Saba Brothers | NSW Ambassadors for the Bully Zero Australia Foundation.

This very talented trio of brothers and musicians stand together against bullying and recently headed down to Melbourne to attend the foundations annual charity ball along with 1000 fellow Australians all supporting this great cause.

Ambassadors from all over the country were in attendance as the brothers - Raymond, Steven and Nathan had the incredible opportunity of having their original composition showcased. Their song is a wonderful anti-bullying anthem, called 'What Ya Gonna Do' and was written by Nathan when he was just 9 years old and recorded when he was eleven. The clip was aired on the big screen, in front of all those in attendance, as the foundation shared the work of their educators and community from over the past year.

This was such an honour for the boys and Marsden High School is proud of their achievement and of their courage to stand up and be the voice for such an important message.

Fire Talk Sparks Success Over At Marsden High School

My name is Elijah; I am a prefect at Marsden and in my final year of high school I ran a community service project called Fire Talk with the help of my coach Chris as part of a leadership program called Max Potential. This opportunity has really helped me with developing myself and creating experiences that will help me in my future. Max potential overall was an exciting workshop for me, as I wanted to improve, and grow as a person. More specifically the chance to do a community service project challenged me and brought out a sense of hardship, accomplishment, and success.

In more detail my community service project Fire Talk, was based on fire safety. Due to the recent happenings in the school (as it was previously in a fire incident); I thought it would be a great idea to educate, reiterate and raise awareness to the dangers of fire, and how the students (Year 7) can plan and prepare for certain situations and what they had to do to make sure they were always safe at home from any risk of fire.

I taught them various things such as how to use fire equipment like extinguishers and the differences between the various types, how to set up a fire escape plan at home with their family, the differences between certain fires and how to deal with them, and much much more.

I created and presented this workshop with the help and assistance of the Fire & Rescue Team over at Top Ryde. They came down to Marsden High School, added more detail to my presentation, talked about their jobs, answered any of the kids questions, and overall helped me with researching and presenting my workshop.

The community service project took place at Marsden High school at 9:15 – 12:15 as we had multiple sessions to make sure that every Year 7 students got a chance to learn and take part in the workshop. However the Fire Crew did have to leave half way through as they were called to an emergency.

Overall Fire Talk was a huge success in my eyes as the students were really engaged and I firmly believed that they got something valuable from my workshop. They learned not only knowledge but more importantly skills that could one day potentially save their own or someone else's life. In fact it was so successful that I plan to make it my Legacy and hold it every year for the new coming year 7's at Marsden High school. If I'm no longer part of the prefecture leadership team, I will leave behind a booklet on how to run the workshop as well as some resources such as my PowerPoint and contact info so hopefully they can run it for the years to come.

Lastly I just want to thank Max Potential, the various sponsors, the Epping Club, and more specifically Mel and Chris for really pushing me and giving me the opportunity to try something new and out of my comfort zone. I also want to thank Rebecca and the Ryde Fire & Rescue team that came down to assist me in my workshop as without them my community service project would not have been as successful and interesting.

Over 10 years, Max Potential has developed an enviable reputation as a world-class coaching program, making an impact across city and regional NSW. Max Potential connects emerging young leaders (aged 16 – 23 years old) with local community leaders as volunteer coaches. The program runs over five months with one-on-one coaching, workshops and a focus on delivering community service projects to make a difference in the local region. It was created in partnership with the Clubs peak industry association - ClubsNSW - and is supported by not-for-profit registered Clubs throughout NSW. There is also significant support from local business, community, media and all levels of government – including speeches of support in Parliament.

A Gathering of Prefects

Our final event for Term 3 was a wonderful acknowledgment of the wealth of strong student leaders we have at Marsden. Our two Prefect Leadership Teams came together for the last time as part of the Prefect Induction Ceremony for our incoming 2017/2018 student leaders.

Beyond Blue Bash Success

Beyond Blue Bash 2017

At the end of Term 3, the Prefect Leadership Team of 2017 held their final Marsden fundraising event - the Beyond Blue Bash in support of building awareness of mental health issues. The students organised a BBQ and Sweet Stall to raise funds for this important cause, and ran a teachers versus students basketball game and organised a staff/student band to entertain us. The current PLT invited the incoming Yr 11 Student Leaders to join them in running this joint event so that they could share ideas and pass on valuable skills and advice.

The Beyond Blue event was a terrific success. We raised approximately $700 to go towards helping young people with mental health issues and the atmosphere on the day was fantastic with powerful music, some impromptu line dancing, a highly-competitive basketball game (in which the Yr 12 students just might have beaten the teachers) and some yummy treats.

Congratulations to our graduating Prefect Leadership Team on another successful event and thank you for all the great initiatives you have put in place over the past 12 months and the fabulous events you have facilitated.

I would just like to take a moment to publicly thank a number of people at Marsden high School...

Let me start by saying thank you to Camilla and the amazing Technology Team at Marsden for all of their hard work with Google and the implementation of the Chromebook/BYOD Program.

They recently took the time to present at a Google Conference, presenting to a number of local and international educators the wonderful BYOD work that Marsden has done thus far.

A HUGE thank you goes out to Camilla as her presentation was outstanding and attracted a lot of attention and positive feedback.

Special thanks goes to Ethan, Miranda, Casey and Tamsin of Year 7 who were involved in the Q&A component of the presentation, answering questions from participants and representing Marsden so professionally.

A massive shout out also goes out to Hugo and Tenaesha from 7A for their presentation during P3 to our Google visitors. They were amazing at showcasing their work with the Chromebooks and answering all questions thrown at them!

We will continue to build on this years success by introducing BYOD into Year 9 for 2018. This means we will be BYOD in Yr. 7, 8 and 9 at the start of 2018!

OzHarvest is Australia's leading food rescue organisation, collecting quality excess food from commercial outlets and delivering it to more than 900 charities who support those in need right across Australia.

Mr. Woods and Marsden High School would love you all to show your support by bringing in food donations. We will be collecting food items between now and next Wednesday, 13 September with the OZharvest ambassador coming in personally to collect the food next Wednesday afternoon.

Yesterday was a very successful day for our talented students ...

Starting with the Marsden Debating Team, who had an impressive win against Riverside Girls High School, with a tricky 4WD topic. All team members put on an incredible performance and worked exceptionally well as a team. Well done!!!

AND ...

Congratulations to the Opens Basketball team for winning the Grade Sport competition against Sydney Secondary College Leichhardt Campus!!

What a game! Marsden were off to an early lead only to fall behind in the second half. A time out was called with just two minutes to go and only one point between the teams. Marsden walked away with a 32-28 win after a winning basket secured with a free throw. Well done boys!!!

AND ...

Last but not least, congratulations to our U/15's Boys OzTag team who also put in a stella performance to win the Grade Sport Grand Final 8-2!

Well done to all of the students who competed in these events yesterday and achieved incredible results for themselves, their teams and their school. Congratulations!

• 9.30am-11.30am Thursday October 12th 2017_ Marsden High School Targeted Transition Program to support students with anxiety/emotional/social issues where a smaller group environment will ease them into high schoosl. • 9.30am-2.30pm Friday October 20th 2017 - Welcome to High School Day Year 6 into Year 7 students will be placed in classes and experience a "normal" day at high school where a variety of subjects are on offer. More details will be forwarded towards the end of this term.

• 6.30 pm-7.30pm Monday 27th November 2017 - Settling into High School parent information session to include BYOD Information. To be held in our school library – Pinnacle Programinformation session will be held between 5.45pm - 6.30pm

• Tuesday 5th December 2017 Orientation Day– state wide event for incoming Year 7students. In September we will forward you a comprehensive "Individual Student Package"which will include an information sheet for Orientation Day, uniform requirements and price list, and school fees, all of which can be taken care of on Orientation Day. Stationery requirements will be included, and Opal Card information will also be available from State Transport NSW representatives.

Dear Marsden Community | A Message from the Principal

Dear Marsden Community,

I want to take this opportunity to thank the Marsden High School and wider community for their support regarding the fire which affected our school on the early hours of 3, August. During the week since the fire we have had many offers of assistance for which we are grateful.

The cause of the fire has not been finalised by the investigating officers and they are considering all possibilities, including electrical fault. The extent of the fire damage has had a considerable effect on our school. The school was closed for three days as there was no power and a significant amount of clean-up was needed for areas around the school before we could become operational again.

One Science lab and the adjoining preparation room were completely gutted. The above two classrooms were severely damaged and are currently unsafe to enter. Additionally there are another thirteen classrooms including four specialty rooms, two staff rooms, one meeting room and an office which are off line due to fire related damage. We hope that some of these will be back on line by the start of next term. The school is receiving ten demountable classrooms including a Science and Kitchen demountable. It is expected these will be operational by Monday August 21. The advantages of being part of a large system have been very apparent as we have received immediate and suitable response in terms of getting the school back to being able to deliver high quality educational programmes very quickly.

Our students have been outstanding in their understanding of the inconvenience caused, and their respect towards the many contractors working on site has been observed and reported back to the Deputy Principals and myself. I also want to acknowledge the extreme professionalism demonstrated by our teaching staff throughout this event. A lot of curve balls have come their way and they have been able to manage the difficulties with confidence and ease.

Last but not least, we are truly appreciative of the support we have received from our local partner primary and high schools, all of whom have offered and delivered support: Ermington PS, Ermington West PS, Melrose Park PS, Yates Ave PS, Rydalmere East PS, Ryde PS, Eastwood PS, Eastwood Heights PS, West Ryde PS and Meadowbank PS as well as Epping Boys HS, Cumberland HS and Ryde Secondary College.

Every year, Marsden High School Library celebrates the Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book Week with an Author Visit and a Book Review Competition. This year's Author Visit will be with award winning author, Steven Herrick! - Australia's favourite poet for young people.

Steven Herrick has published over 20 books with his work being studied in the HSC. His "Poetry, to the Rescue" performances for Year 7 students are outstanding. If you would like to know more about Steven Herrick and his work, please head to his website.

The aim of the CBCA is to engage the community with literature for young Australians as do we in your school library. The CBCA presents annual awards to books of literary merit, for outstanding contribution to Australian children's literature and as a school we have been lucky enough to have purchased all of the nominated Books for older readers - and they are available to borrow. These books are the best new Australian Novels and Picture Books - and well worth the read! If you would like to know more about The CBCA or the CBCA Book Awards here is the link: CBCA

Writing Competition:

During this years Book Week, the library will be running a competition to celebrate two great authors and their outstanding books.

To get involved, you need to write a book review of 500 words or less on any book written by JK Rowling or Jane Austin.

JK Rowling:

By now, you would have heard that the Harry Potter Books by J.K. Rowling were first published 20 years ago!

In June 1997, Bloomsbury published Philosopher's Stone with an initial print run of 1,000 copies, 500 of which were distributed to libraries. Today, such copies are valued between $30,000 and $50,000. Five months later, the book won its first award, a Nestle Smarties Book Prize. In February, the novel won the British Book Award for Children's Book of the Year, and later, the Children's Book Award. In October 1998, Scholastic published Philosopher's Stone in the US under the title of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The rest is history as they say.

Jane Austin

Miss Jane Austin died 200 years ago in July 1817, at the age of 41! Her classic novel Pride and Prejudice, which is still a favourite book for many, was first published in 1813!

While other early nineteenth century authors have fallen into obscurity, Austen's works have remained in print, grew in popularity throughout the Victorian era and have been embraced by Hollywood in the twentieth century - elevating her to pop culture icon status with the new millennium.

The Young Endeavour Youth Scheme is an internationally recognised youth development program and has been operating for more than 20 years to provide Australian Youth a unique, challenging and inspirational experience at sea.

The ship was gifted to Australia in 1988 and since then more than 12,500 young Australians have completed the program. No sailing experience is required as the ship is operated by a professional Royal Australian Navy crew who work tirelessly to ensure the highest standards of safety are met. They will teach each member of the youth crew the skills to sail this fantastic tall ship, including taking the helm, handling lines on deck, navigating, climbing the mast and even cooking.

Just 24 youth from across Australia will join each eleven day voyage. Once selected, the lucky crew members are given a position aboard the national sail training ship 'Young Endeavour', where they learn and develop important life skills. The voyages work to increase self awareness, develop teamwork and leadership skills and create a strong sense of community responsibility amongst the youth crew. The benefit for being involved in this program is enormous now and into the future, as the participants are recognised for their potential to make positive contributions to the community.

The Young Endeavour 2017 Voyage Ballot is now open for applications, so if you are aged 16-23 apply now to join the crew. Eligible young Australians can apply for Youth Development voyages sailing through to December 2017.

Last term Marsden High School presented an energetic and fun filled night of 80's nostalgia, showcasing the outstanding young talent we have at MHS. Our singers, dancers, actors and musicians all put in an incredible performance that entertained both young and old alike. Couple this with the wonderfully daggy 80s costumes and hair, the totally rad Rubiks Cube set and hit-after-hit 80's anthems that played all night, you truely were transported Back to the 80's. Congratulations and thank you to all of the cast, crew and teachers for their tireless efforts in making this production an overwhelming success.

If not all your children appear above, add missing students with their own booking codes, or click ‘remove' if you want to book interviews separately for some children on this group booking, using the unique codes provided.

STEP 2: Confirm you can attend the event. Your specific time restrictions and time preferences may be entered in the My Details tab if needed. Open time availability generally gives you more compact schedules however.

STEP 3: Click Request Interviews tab, and drag any teacher you want to see across to the Teachers I want to see side of the table. This list is prioritised in the order of importance to you, with most important at the top. Higher priority interviews may be allocated over others if there is high demand for some busy teachers. You do not need to select all teachers unless you want to see them all. You may modify your selections up until 3.15pm on Monday 17th July.

STEP 4: Wait for the scheduled publishing date which will be Tuesday 18^th July. Log in using your existing booking code, and print off your allocated interview schedule, or make manual changes to the schedule times if necessary and print off your amended schedule.

2017 NAIDOC Celebrations

Tuesday 27th June saw Marsden High School host an incredible day of NAIDOC celebrations at Sydney Olympic Park. Students from Arthur Phillip, Northmead, Epping Boys, Parramatta and Pendle Hill High School's came together and were treated to didgeridoo and aboriginal performances, a mini gala touch football match with NRL players and a player meet and greet.

The day was an overwhelming success and we thank all of those involved in making it such a fun and impactful day.

Athletics Carnival | 2017

Athletics Carnival

On Thursday 25^th May, Marsden High school held its annual school athletics carnival at Dunbar Park in Marsfield. Lucky for everyone involved the weather turned out perfectly on the day and we were able to run all events.

The day was filled with high levels of participation with great sportsmanship and competitiveness on show. Students showed a great level of skill in all events especially the hotly contested 100m sprint races. It was also the long awaited revealing of the school mascot ‘Gordon Ramsey' and great school spirit was on show.

We had 45 students progress to the Zone Carnival where 21 of them are now going through to the regional carnival. This is a great result for Marsden High school and a much improved level of participation this year.

Lastly I would like to thank all the staff who helped out on the day and the roles you played to make the Carnival a success, especially my fellow PDHPE faculty members who helped organised this wonderful whole school event.

Congratulations to Ben S. the recipient of the Pierre De Coubertin Awards for 2017.

The Pierre De Coubertin awards recognises secondary students who have demonstrated values which are consistent with those of the Olympic Movement through participation in sporting activities.

Ben has not only played soccer for 14 year, representing West Ryde, Ermington and playing in New Zealand, but he has also been an outstanding representative of Marsden High School, competing in a wide variety of sporting events including our school soccer team, triathlons, zone athletics and cross country. Ben is an all round sportsperson who consistently displays sportsmanlike qualities including teamwork and discipline.

An Australian service that provides busy parents of teenagers with free, confidential one-on-one parenting help will be launched today by digital mental health service ReachOut Australia.

Delivered using a mix of online and pre-booked phone sessions, ReachOut Parents Coaching gives parents the flexibility to access support from anywhere in the country.

Any parent who is worried about their relationship with their teenager, or concerned about their teenager's wellbeing or behaviour, can access up to four phone sessions with a professional parenting coach as well as a range of personalised digital resources.

All phone sessions are delivered by trained professionals from The Benevolent Society – experts in helping families build strong relationships – and tailored to an individual's specific goals and situation. This means that parents will receive practical strategies they can put to use immediately after their first call.

"This is the first generation of parents facing issues around technology and social media in addition to the age old challenges such as bullying, drinking, sex and relationships. We also know that around one in four young people are likely to have a mental illness," said ReachOut CEO Jono Nicholas.

Pinnacle Program Preparation Day

The aim of this day is to provide students with the opportunity to engage with Twenty First Century learning skills, such as collaboration, communication and problem solving. Students will have the opportunity to show us their ability to be innovative and creative as they participate in a range of critical thinking activities. The preparation day is a brilliant way for students to develop the tools for success in the Pinnacle Program.

Our school library is currently still in the process of being upgraded and later this term we are expecting a delivery of some very modern, custom built shelving, but in the mean time you may have noticed some new signage - in particular our 'Library' sign on the front door.

GOOGLE WORKSHOP ...

Term 1 saw a team of Marsden and IEC teachers attended a day long Google Workshop.

Our teachers went to the Google office in Darling Harbour for a workshop on Google Docs and Chrome Books. Everyone agreed, this was a very informative and interesting day where we all learnt a number of new impressive applications. We were also afforded the opportunity to tour the very impressive Google office - which was fantastic!!! They have an incredible work space, including scooters to get around on, relaxation areas, a movie room and free food and drink at their many cafes throughout the building.

Overall it was a very productive day organised by Mr. Evans.

Year 7 BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) Program.

Parent Meeting 21 June 2017 starting 6PM

Marsden High school is transitioning into a BYOD school in 2017, with Year 7 being the first cohort for the program. The teachers at Marsden High School have created cutting edge digital learning experiences for our Year 7 students. To be able to access these activities in term 3 2017, every student in Year 7 will need to purchase a Chromebook laptop in the coming weeks.

As a school, we believe that Chromebooks are great value for money. Chromebooks will provide our students with an affordable device that quickly and easily connects them to Marsden High School's network. Chromebooks are designed to work with Google GSuite and Google Drive, making collaboration, backup and file sharing easy to manage. NSW Health 2017 Meningococcal W Response Program: Years 11 and 12

NSW Health is offering vaccination against four types of meningococcal disease (given as one injection) to Year 11 and 12 students through the School Vaccination Program in Term 2.

Parent Information Kits (for parents/guardians which include an information sheet, consent form and privacy statement will be sent home from the school with your child early in Term 2.

To consent to the vaccination of your child, parents/guardians are advised to read all the information provided complete the consent form, including signing the form return the completed consent form to the school ensure that your child eats breakfast on the day of the school vaccination clinic.

Please note that students who are absent on the day of the Vaccination Clinic will be advised to have the vaccine at their GP later in the year (referral letter will be provided).

The Marsden Music Academy

Introducing The Marsden Music Academy.

The Marsden Music Academy will be providing private music tuition to students for piano, violin, flute, clarinet, saxophone and brass.

Each session will be conducted by a professional music teacher and run for 30 minutes. The cost will be $400 per term, based on a 10 week term and will commence Week One of Term 2.

Congratulations to two of our very talented students...

Cameron S. who successfully made the Sydney North Regional AFL TEAM. Cameron trialled against 45 students from Burwood to Gosford, with just 22 students making the cut. Cameron now goes on to play other regions at the upcoming State carnival in Nelsons Bay.

Claire X. will be competing at the State swimming carnival after successfully qualifying fastest in 4 events - 200m and 100m freestyle, 200m individual medley and 100m butterfly in which Claire set the regional record. Claire will now go on to represent Sydney North at state level at the Combined High Schools Swimming carnival,

Premiers Reading Challenge 2017

The NSW Premier's Reading Challenge 2017 has STARTED for this Year!!!!!

Welcome to the NSW Premier's Reading Challenge

For 15 years, the Premier's Reading Challenge has been supporting students in NSW by promoting a love of reading for pleasure and leisure and providing them with opportunities to experience quality literature.

In 2016 a total of 277,098 students successfully completed the NSW Premier's Reading Challenge, this is more than in any other year.

The Premier's Reading Challenge Booklist features almost 8,000 titles, with 500 new titles added for 2017.

In our Library we have a dedicated area containing Premier's Reading Challenge Books so students can easily access and borrow selected books.

Students in years 7-9 must read 20 books since the close of the challenge in September 2016 until the close of the 2017 Challenge in August.

Introducing the 2017 Marsden High School Prefect Leadership Team

School Captain: Alessandra S.

I attended Linden Park Primary School. I instantly created relationships and connections with the students and the staff. I remember being very fond of my teachers due to their fun loving and open-minded attitude towards their students. Due to this, I had the courage to join the SRC and through this I was able to gain confidence and leadership skills. Events and activities, such as sports day, pyjama day, crazy hair day and other fundraising activities that were run by the students and the staff impacted me positively; traits that I now have in High School were created due to my participation in the school community. I am grateful for what Linden Park offered to me as an individual.

For my HSC I am studying Advanced English, General Mathematics, Business Studies, Visual Arts, Music, Studies of Religion and VET Film and Media Productions. The short term goal is to excel in the subjects that I have chosen, which evidently, will give me the opportunity to achieve a high ATAR, which is my long term goal. UTS is currently a university that I am looking into due to their ability to offer a double degree of International Studies and my preferred course.

I am both academically and artistically driven therefore I take interest in a variety of things such as art, literature, history, film. I am also very passionate about my love for dogs specifically ones that are extremely fluffy, I do however love all breeds of dogs equally. Aside from that I am also musically inclined, I play the guitar and sing, and have a love for jazz music. I participated in two musicals in my old high school and am willing to be in another one. I am also very confident in speaking therefore I take part in debates, such as the ones run by the UN Youth Organisation.

My experiences at Marsden have been positive and students and teachers are very inclusive, however, that excludes the deafening shrieks of junior students in the hallway and the constant battle of trying to walk through a sea of students. Apart from that however I am fond of the events and activities that are run in Marsden, especially ones that I have never experienced before such as Revolution Red and Jeans for Jeans day.

I have taken part in the SRC at Marsden and have been involved with selling roses during Valentine's Day, Marsfest and the Marsden Cup. I enjoyed the liveliness of the student life and their willingness to participate in the events, especially the students who volunteered to help with putting up stalls and cleaning up after the event. The helpful and encouraging behaviour that students possess is what I want to be able to showcase to both the school and the community outside it. The HSC is of great importance to me due to it being fundamental to guiding me through the pathway that I will choose. This is of course a factor as to what my future will hold, and is indefinite, however, it serves as a guide in making me achieve my goals as well as what the teachers and the staff at Marsden offer; for in which I am very grateful.

I believe that being a School Captain means that I have the capability to be compassionate towards others and have an open-mind to different values and ideas. It is also about being motivated and having integrity, because without these two factors, I cannot be an effective leader. As the newly elected School Captain I aim to become the pathway and the voice of the students. I want the students to understand the value of education as well as enjoying their time in their learning environment. I want to be able to leave the school with pride, knowing that as a School Captain I was able to create a shift in attitude in the students view of being in High School.

School Captain: Callum I.

I attended West Ryde Public School and being School Captain there was a great experience for me. I feel it gave me experience and skills that will be useful in my role as a member of the prefecture team this year. For the HSC I am studying English Advanced, Modern History, Korean Beginners, General Maths, Music and Chinese Beginners. Learning Chinese and Korean will give me options for studying overseas when I leave school, as well as helping me to communicate with and understand members of the community here in Australia. Modern History will provide me with excellent foundation skills for university, and Music will provide me with a creative outlet for when I leave school to continue playing with my band. I love playing the guitar with my band, Jesus Christ and basketball, not necessarily in that order.

At Marsden I have really enjoyed great mates, teachers who are passionate about the subjects they teach and being part of the Christian Lunchtime group on Thursdays. The programs I have been involved in at Marsden include Mock Trial and Debating. These are both essentially arguing with a more professional-sounding name, and were great fun and helped me to develop my public speaking skills. In addition, being a member of the Basketball team was great fun and last year we even won the grand finals!

From the few weeks that I have had of my HSC year at Marsden I can't tell a whole lot, but it is already clear that it is going to be a good one. I know that 2016 and 2017 are going to be full of great opportunities, and I feel really supported by the teachers we have here to be able to give the HSC a good shot.

I think a really important part of being part of the Prefecture team is giving a voice to the opinions of the students here at Marsden. We were elected by the will of the people, and now our job is to fulfil the will of the people, whatever that may be. I would really like to establish effective communication between the prefects and the rest of the school, so that we can best know what the students at Marsden really want. It would also be great to see every student at Marsden take ownership and responsibility of their school, because in the end what we achieve as prefects won't just come down to us or the teachers, it will involve everyone here at Marsden.

Sports Prefect: Sarah T.

During my primary schooling I went to two schools; North Cross Christian and Croydon Park Public School where I enjoyed being in the junior rock eisteddfod , sports carnivals and the Year 6 fun day. For my HSC I am studying Music, Community and Family Studies, Mathematics, English Advanced, PDHPE and Biology.

After completing school I would like to study something within the medical line of degrees at University. I have been inspired through my current studying of Biology and PDHPE where I have learnt about the function and makeup of the human body. Additionally, CAFS has taught me about the way people act and why. To keep me focussed upon my goal, my hobbies include sport, in particular soccer, athletics, dance, netball, touch; music where I play drums, piano, guitar and sing as well as my faith, helping people and art.

During my time at Marsden I have really enjoyed meeting people with similar interests as well as accessing programs and opportunities I've never experienced before which has shaped who I am. My time in the SRC has given me leadership experience in coordinating events, including fundraising for the school. This gave me the skill set to successfully participate in the Peer Support Program assisting new students in Year 7 going through one of the biggest changes in their life to date. I play in both the Concert Band and Jazz ensemble which has really inspired me musically, giving me opportunities to play with other musicians. In Year 10 I enjoyed participating in the Mock Trial, which involved learning law terms and acting it out, as well as the Galileo project which honed my investigation skills. The Talented Sports Program and Dance Ensemble both gave me strong opportunities by allowing me to refine my skills through competitions and performances.

As Sports Prefect I have been given the opportunity to organise and improve the profile of sport within the school. My key aim is to get more of Marsden involved, including improving motivation and enthusiasm in sports events, especially for girls.

Sports prefect: Jordan W.

I went to Ermington Public School and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. I was School Captain in Year 6 and was involved in numerous sporting teams including representing the school at regional carnivals. Currently I am studying Mathematics, English, PDHPE, Modern History, Biology and Music. These subjects may provide the basis for employment in the health industry. I'm especially interested in health policy and promotion or other options include PE teaching and sports science. There's even the possibility for a pursuit in the music industry.

I enjoy playing the drums, sport in general and especially soccer and youth group/church. I have enjoyed my time at Marsden, especially doing extracurricular activities such as the Galileo project (Big History) which included learning about the universe and global issues. I also have enjoyed hanging out with the friends I have made through the school, playing music and participating in sporting teams, such as soccer, basketball and cricket. The latter included having fun versing other schools. My sporting skills have allowed me to coach primary schools at gala days where I've gained experience in teaching and developing gross motor skills of younger students. On top of those opportunities I gained a lot from participating in the Peer support program, which involved teaching and helping younger students adapt to high school. In recent years I have participated in the Jazz ensemble as a drummer which I liked because I learnt different pieces and gained an appreciation of other genres of music.

Doing the HSC at Marsden has helped me with preparation for University or employment, as well as giving me lots of opportunities to develop leadership abilities and a mature approach to study. In my role as Sports Prefect, I'm looking forward to working with my fellow leadership team and helping organise fundraising events; advocating for greater involvement in sport for students with all levels of fitness and interests; representing the school in a positive way and working with the PE department to promote a healthy lifestyle. I'd like to organise lunchtime sporting events that interest a wide variety of students of all abilities.

I attended Jianghan Oil Field Foreign Language Primary School in China where I was a class and school events organiser as well as a class meeting host. Currently I am studying ESL, Physics, Mathematics, Mathematics Extension 1, Chinese Background Speaker Course, Business Studies and Society and Culture. These subjects help me gain and improve my basic knowledge in languages of English and Chinese, providing me the opportunities to understand and interpret in two languages.

When I finish the HSC I would like to study business at university. Business Studies has provided the foundation for that interest, as well as Mathematics which I have realised assists me with setting out processes. Since beginning my HSC journey I have learned that through studying Physics, my interest in the world around me has increased. On the flip side of that Society and Culture has magnified my understanding of common sense and how communities function. My key hobbies are dancing, acting, watching movies, reading, making friends and studying.

At Marsden, I have enjoyed studying in the cool and quiet senior library area with my friends. I've enjoyed resting under the safety shelters, making friends with teachers. I've enjoyed the atmosphere when everybody is laughing. I've enjoyed the multicultural community we have and being involved in everything I can. I have participated in Junior sports; Marsfest; last year's School Musical ‘Dracula Spectacular'; selling Valentine roses and being a member of the SRC. Doing HSC at Marsden means the opportunity to see who I really am. It means studying in a less stressful environment. Marsden is not like other schools which can only push further but see the process as the most important part. Doing the HSC here requires my self- control and self- learnt abilities. It is the way to ace my result and get what I want.

Being a Prefect means responsibilities, courage, challenges to me. I wish to continue to contribute my best to Marsden
as well as my study. As a Prefect, I'd like to try my best to create a united community, to reduce the chances of
bullying and to show others the importance of being optimistic in both living and studying. I hope I can influence Marsden in the ways of confidence and kindness.

I went to two primary schools: Rydalmere East Public School and Remuera Intermediate (Auckland, NZ). During primary school I particularly enjoyed being a part of the sports teams and going on various excursions. I also enjoyed the project work we did using ICT. For my HSC I am studying Maths Extension 1, Advanced English, Korean Beginners, Modern History, Chemistry, Physics and History Extension. There are lots of different courses and jobs that I am interested in doing but I haven't been able to decide which one to try first. I hope that the subjects I have chosen will provide me with the marks and skills to provide these opportunities for me in the future. My hobbies and interests include listening to music and both playing and watching sport. My favourite sports are snowboarding and triathlon. I also enjoy spending time at the beach and exploring new places.

I have enjoyed the opportunities Marsden has given to me – both curricula and extra-curricula. My Year Adviser and year group was particularly welcoming, when I started as a ‘late-comer' at Marsden in Year 8. I have particularly enjoyed the co-operative learning I have taken part in, with the friends I have made. At Marsden I have been involved in the Talented Sports Program and the annual Ski Trip. I really enjoyed these opportunities because they bring together students from all year groups. I think this is special, as at school we would not normally interact with each other. These opportunities also allowed students to get to build strong relationships with the teachers. These relationships have improved the discussions I have about my learning, with these teachers.

Completing my HSC at Marsden means that I feel supported by my friends and teachers. It is an environment in which I feel I can do my best. As a Prefect I hope to continue the hard work put in by previous Prefects and to continue to offer opportunities previously offered to the students at Marsden. I believe that these opportunities are essential to the learning experience at Marsden and have been something that I have enjoyed.

I had the pleasure of going to Rydalmere Public School. I remember always feeling included and doing amazing things with my peers when representing the school, such as going to Imax or Parliament House. For my HSC I am studying English Advanced; English Extension; Biology; Mathematics General 2; Modern history; Ancient History; Extension History and Community and Family Studies. When I graduate from Marsden, these subjects will give me the opportunity to be a history teacher or a teacher in general, which is the career that I would like to undertake. It gives me the opportunity to deepen my research through similar studies at university. My main hobbies and interests include: singing (occasionally), reading and watching crime shows.

I have really enjoyed my time at Marsden though things happen, all issues get resolved and my learning has been exceptional. I have made amazing friends that will last a lifetime and I have had the pleasure of having wonderful staff teach me and make my journey a fun one. During the years of 2014-2015 I was a part of the debating team, this gave me the opportunity to develop skills on how to argue respectfully and I have learned that no matter what happens, stay respectful in your speaking. I was a part of the school choir for a number of years from 2011-2015 which was a fun atmosphere. The friends I made allowed me to enjoy singing and really learn how to grasp the concept of a team.

Doing the HSC at Marsden has been positive for me as I live close to the school and I can easily access libraries as well as the amazing learning facilities at Marsden. I also get to go for the ride with friends I have made since year 7, which means a lot to me. My goal as a Prefect is to make students feel like they do have a voice and a say in the events of the school, as well as making the teachers feel as though they can truly rely on students to complete given tasks. The concepts and events that will take place over the next year will not only dictate the type of leaders we are but the type of leaders the students are. Getting the student body involved in more tasks is my main priority in the coming year.

I attended Arif Al- Nackadi Primary School in Syria and was the School Captain which gave me a great opportunity to discover my leadership skills. I fulfilled the role to the best of my abilities. I was a member of the peer support and helped students with their homework and studying for their exams. At the moment I am doing 15 units: ESL English, General Mathematics, Studies of Religion, VET Retail, PDPHPE, Plumbing at TAFE and Extension Arabic at Saturday school.

I have a great interest in career choices that involve physical fitness and personal health. However I would like to keep my options open as I am unsure exactly what the future holds. In the meantime I would like to improve my skills and take up subjects that broaden my knowledge and understanding.

My interests involve practising my native language, Arabic, by writing poems and short stories to further express my humanity, my personal thoughts and feelings. Besides literature, I thoroughly enjoy partaking in physical fitness and ensuring I take care of my health and body, this involves me participating in morning runs, weight lifting and Soccer.

For me Marsden has been the place where I learned from A to Z. When I first came to Marsden High School I couldn't speak anything besides Arabic, but coming to Marsden through the IEC changed that. Now I am able to speak English functionally and confidently. Therefore I have a great respect for Marsden and I am willing to give back to the school. I enjoy the way school works and the fact the students have a voice and can change things at school. At Marsden we have great facilities such as the Gym, outdoor gym, covered outdoor learning area, library and seniors study areas with support from teachers and heaps more. I have been involved in the cross country and swimming carnivals which were enjoyable as I like sport.

Doing the HSC at Marsden meant the pathway for a bright future. It has afforded me opportunities for further success in
my life. I am working to achieve my goals through the help of our great teachers and the support of the community.
Being a Prefect at Marsden High School equips me with a chance to display my ideas and learn from my mates and share what I learned from my previous experiences. It also allows me to represent the voice of younger students as I am an approachable person. I will walk out of Marsden High School next year and I would love to leave a nice stamp on Marsden High School's history.

I enjoyed my primary school days at Luoyang Bilingual Experimental School in China where I was a presenter of study from Year 1 to Year 6. As a presenter of study I was tasked with helping other students study and communicate with our teachers about any questions we might have with our study. From Year 7 to Year 9 at Luoyang Second Foreign Language Middle School, I was the presenter of Art. This allowed me to manage school events and festivals and therefore develop an appreciation of the importance of ‘teamwork'.

Currently I am studying ESL English, 3 or 4 Unit Maths, Biology, Japanese (Extension), Korean Beginners and Chinese Background. I am really interested in psychology so in future I want to choose clinical psychology as my university course and psychologist as my future career. The other area I am interested in is International studies as I am learning a lot of languages as part of my HSC. I always enjoy learning new languages as it includes finding out about other cultures. I especially find it amazing to chat with people from another culture, in their own language.

My hobbies are painting, photography, music, reading, swimming and skiing. At Marsden I have really enjoyed meeting new friends, new teachers and studying the subjects that I like. I really enjoyed MarsFest, where we watched the wonderful performances from our peers. Additionally I felt Revolution Red was very worthwhile as it shows the serious impact of bullying and how important it is to be united as a whole school against it.

Completing the HSC at Marsden has involved studying with our peers together to make progress and working hard to achieve a great ATAR, which will help me get to university. Being a prefect comes with a responsibility as my goal is to create a better place to learn for our peers. I hope I can help other students new to our school adjust quickly to the new environment. I hope with our PLT we can create a better environment and atmosphere for learning.

I proudly went to Eastwood Public School and what I enjoyed most about it was being able to develop an understanding and passion for my future hobbies that have since moulded me into the person I am now. One of the greatest moments was the development of my love for learning. At present I am studying Modern History, Ancient History, English Advanced, Extension History, PDHPE, Studies of Religion and SLR. I am looking at getting into Media and Communications as my main courses, though pretty much anything relating to geopolitics and to the media and journalism is what interests me.

Hobbies I enjoy are filmmaking and photography. I have an intense passion for movies and even created my own Youtube channel to discuss everything in the world of movies, down to movie reviews and the behind the scenes of the film industry (currently on hiatus due to HSC commitments). I also love sport and have enjoyed working with AFL NSW/ACT as an Umpire and helping with many leadership positions in Junior Australian Football. Other sports I enjoy are football (soccer), cricket and Ice Hockey. I have a passion for the environment and human rights. My keen interest in politics has helped me develop a relationship with UN Youth and other Model UN programs that constantly test me and expand my horizons. I've also had a love for inspiring others and through my church and Christian beliefs I am filled with hope for the future and I have made it my duty to help others out, regardless of who they are, all human beings are equal under the law.

Marsden has provided me with many of my closest friends and given me plenty of opportunities that I am happy to have been able to experience. Each Mock Trial win made me ecstatic; every Duke of Ed camp further developed the friendships that I had and provided me with lifelong experiences and memories. Marsden's been a fantastic school and I've been blessed to have met many brilliant individuals making my time at Marsden absolutely phenomenal. I believe that the importance of the HSC is over hyped, regardless of which I still perceive it as important. It will be a tough 12 months but I will take it in my stride, attempt not to get too stressed out and go the distance this year. The HSC is a challenge but if 70,000 students each year can do it, I'm sure I can too.

Being a prefect is a great honour and one filled with responsibility. It means I have opportunities to make decisions which will influence the school. Leadership is difficult though and it can be hard as my umpiring experience has told me, everyone wishes to disagree unless the decision benefits them. My prefecture colleagues are currently in the development process for many new ideas and I hope the students, staff and parents will be excited to see these ideas. I have utmost faith in my Prefecture colleagues that we can make a difference. Maybe only a small difference in the grander scale of the world, but you gotta start somewhere. So why not here? I intend on doing the very best I can to uphold the name of Marsden High School and when my time is up I want to reflect that I was able to make the school a better place. I've also planted a couple of trees within the Marsden school grounds, so I wouldn't mind one of those trees being named after myself.

My favourite memory of Rydalmere East Public School was being a Prefect in Year 6. For my HSC I am studying Advanced English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Modern History and Mathematics 2 unit. The Science subjects give me the opportunity to meet all prerequisites for Science-based courses at university. When I finish the HSC I would like to study subjects within the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) field. I have a wide variety of hobbies and interests which include cooking, collecting rocks and coins, swimming to relax and unwind, gaming, reading picture books and collecting Lego sets. The key thing I have enjoyed about my time at Marsden is meeting new people.

Throughout my time at Marsden I have participated in a lot of activities. The most memorable include being involved in Australian Business Week in Year 10 where I had a lot of fun role modelling a CEO. I have also really enjoyed being part of the SRC, it is not only fun but makes me feel as if I am a member of something important. Completing the HSC at Marsden is challenging and that is important as I want to go to university. I feel that I am being provided with the right opportunities to be successful.

I am proud to have been selected to be a Prefect at Marsden. It means I represent the interests of students and can contribute to making school an enjoyable experience. My goal is to be the best prefect I can be and provide good opportunities to others.

Marsden says No to Bullying!

Last week students right across the school stood united in support of the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence for 2017.

All students received a NDA2017 wrist bands in support of this important day and Years 7-10 also received a student card outlining 'what you can do" about bullying.

Each class also took the time to sign a letter and construct a display which proudly hung in the schools canteen to show that "Marsden Says No to Bullying" and to remind us all to "Say Something".

Marsden High School is proud to be an National Day of Action school! We're joining the nationwide movement and standing united against bullying this Friday, 17 March on what is the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence.

We believe that we need to be actively involved in shaping the future of our students, the next generation. For our school, the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence provides an opportunity to continue the conversation and have meaningful discussions about how we can all work together to address bullying and violence and find solutions to end bullying in schools.

The English as a Second Language (ESL) department at Marsden has long been the vanguard of academic success. In another coup for the department, we recently invited two high achieving students from the class of 2016 to motivate and enrich this year's cohort. Ana Choi, 2016 Dux of Marsden and Alexis Kim, a band 6 ESL student. They shared their secrets of success with an attentive audience intent on emulating their feats. We thank them for the time given and acknowledge their unsurpassed achievements. International Women's Day 2017

Today marks International Women's Day, a day designed to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women around the world. As part of this years celebration, Miss Rubbo, along with Alessandra, Lexie, Dragana and Olivia, attended the annual International Women's Day Breakfast in Sydney Olympic Park.

They were treated to an art exhibition, musical performances, a special talk by multi-award winning motivational speaker, Fay Jackson, and a delicious breakfast.

While International Women's day aims to celebrate the worldwide achievements of women, the day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

So, as members of the Marsden community, whether you are male or female, we ask that you stand up and

Getting Your Techno Power Back!

I'm just going to say it...

It is irresponsible for you to give your child unsupervised access to a device that allows them free and open access to the world and all of its dark and uninhibited places, without appropriate levels of protective supervision.

All too often, I am having conversations with parents who feel as though they have ‘lost control' over their children's level of engagement with technology. This is a concern, because losing control means that you are giving away a level of protection. Nationally, our teens spend 33 hours per week (outside of school) connected. That's almost a full-time job.

Your kids do not need a 30 or 40-something year old friend. It is much harder for you to set protective boundaries if you have a friendship with them. In your home, you are the boss. Your job is to love, nurture, provide, teach values and protect. It does not matter if your child pays for the ‘phones or the internet access. Your home, your rules. You are the experienced grown up charged with providing a safe environment.

80% of what most Australian children do online is hidden from their parents and carers. 80%!!

We have been persuaded into thinking that our kids are entitled to more privacy than we would often allow our - grown up - partners. I have experienced first-hand how this unsupervised access is disaffecting their peer relationships, their self-esteem and their learning. 25% of young Australians are unhappy with their lives and our youth suicide rates are the highest they have been in 10 years.

Unless you know they how to use their devices, where they go on them and who they invite into your house with them, you have no control over who they are spending (significant amounts) time with. This means that you also don't know who is having an affect on their feelings, values and attitudes. You also won't know if your child is not treating others with respect.

Through experience, I have found a couple of ways, which may help you, regain some footing in actively supervising your child's use of technology. They are all very simple and they work. And, please note my use of the words ‘actively supervise'! Passive supervision doesn't solve anything! There is no point in reducing their connection time from 33 hours per week to 10 hours per week if you're still not checking what they are doing.

Know which sites your child holds membership to and have the passwords I suggest that if they are a member of ask.fm or use kik, that they need to be taken off it. Your kids do not need to be using anonymous forms of communication. It provides a platform for them to be untruthful and to watch stuff that they need not be watching. Allowing this, takes away their responsibility for anything they may say to others or others may say to them. A lack of consequence for things kids are saying to each other is having disastrous effects on their emotional intelligence.

Know how to change the Wi-Fi password Only let your kids have access to the password when they've done their jobs their homework, or fulfilled whichever responsibilities you need them to. This is the now-day equivalent of my Mum not letting me ride my BMX until I did my jobs! You can Google how to do it, it is very simple. Many, many kids, set alarms and wake up when the grown ups are asleep to access the internet.

Find out what "flavour" your modem is (Belkin or Netgear for example) and search "How to change Belkin modem password." You can change the password every day if needs be. Xbox and PlayStation time is limited by this too.

Know their social networking friends Our children hang out in ‘virtual villages'. There are many of them speaking with each other about everything, for hours on end. You need to know who else is having an input into how your child thinks and the concepts they are exposed to. Kids share all kinds of porn, images and messages that we would not approve of. I'm not joking.

Have a central location for computers This is all about active supervision. The dining room table, the breakfast bar, the lounge room; make sure you can see what they are accessing.

Take their ‘phones at bedtime Set an alarm on your own ‘phone to remind you. If you child makes a fuss about this, you've just answered whether or not they've already been tempted to do the wrong thing. I literally have kids fall asleep in class because they are not getting enough sleep (I don't think it is my teaching!). Kids do not need to be texting or networking with their friends or playing games right up until the second they fall asleep. Their brains need a chance to refresh, which means they need quiet time. Another tip, don't give the ‘phone back until after they're ready for school in the morning. Their friends can call your landline if there is something important that needs addressing.

I'm not saying it is easy and I do know how hard it can be. You have to be consistent and strong. Speaking with other parents will also help.

2017 MHS Swimming Carnival

On your marks, Get Set, GO!

On Thursday the 16^th of February, Marsden High School held their annual school swimming carnival. The weather on the day was perfect and ideal for swimming. It was definitely a great day to be at Cabarita Swimming Centre and out of the classroom. According to the teachers in attendance, there was record participation from Marsden student's on the day. That's a huge wrap for the student's to get behind a whole school event and congratulations to everyone who got involved in all the swimming events on the day.

School spirit was definitely alive and well, with students sitting in there house groups making sure they were earning points and competing to the best of their abilities. BIG thanks to our house captains for making sure everyone was competing and that their areas where nice and clean.

The events ran smoothly with many standouts on the day. A huge mention to Clair X., the Marsden superfish who broke five school records on the day. We wish all our competitors the best of luck at the Zone carnival which will be held on the 1^st March.

Lastly a huge thank you to the staff and student volunteers who helped on the day. The carnival wouldn't have run as smoothly without your help and the PDHPE staff really appreciated your time and effort. Big thank you to Ms Bugeja who took on the role of recording and captured all the vital information with house scores and age champions and Mr Metzke and Ms Soutter for their efforts in getting the students in there correct races.

Overall the day was a huge success.

Open Day 2017!

This years Open Day will take place on Tuesday March 7 as part of MarsFest.

MarsFest is a week long celebration of all that Marsden High School has to offer. It is an opportunity for the school to showcase to the community, the incredible efforts of our students and staff. We will be hosting numerous displays and a variety of performances will take place across the week. There will also be ample opportunity for parents to get involved and discover Marsden for themselves.

This years meeting for Year 7 and 12 will take place on Tuesday, February 28 in the John Hagan Hall between 4:00pm and 7:00pm.

Year 10 Work Experience

Year 10 Work Experience will now be held during Term 3 from July 31st till August 4th.

Students were given an information note (yellow) today during their Year meeting. Official documents from the DET won't be available until April. Once your child has been accepted for Work Experience by an employer please return the yellow Information note with the details filled in to the Careers office.

Access to technology is vital in a future-focused learning environment to move our education system into a 21st century model of teaching and learning. Marsden High School values these rich learning experiences and recognises the importance that students be equipped with the tools of 21st century learning. Through the use of Chromebooks, it empowers students and gives them direct involvement in the way they use technology for learning.

We have encouraged students to use their own devices at school and with many parents enquiring about a suitable device to purchase, we believe Chromebooks best suit this within the classroom for educational purposes. Using this technology provides students with the opportunity to research, work collaboratively and share information and ideas using 21st century tools such as Google Apps for Education (GAFE).

Parents wishing to purchase a Chromebook for their child's use at school can do so through Hewlett Packard our school's partner, who have provided our parents and caregivers with device purchasing opportunities for our Digital Learning Program.

We are excited to introduce our NEW Rewards System.

Marsden High School is a Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) school. PBL is a way of supporting not only the school in developing Positive behaviours, but a way of encouraging our students to take ownership of their behaviour and working together to create an environment that supports students learning and wellbeing.

Our new reward system is a school-wide, three-tiered continuum underpinned by not only the schools motto of Learning for Life, but also by our CARE philosophy.

Tier 1 = 1 BRONZE AWARD. Students can obtain Bronze Awards by actively displaying positive C.A.R.E behaviours and effort. These are also given for personal success or progress.
Tier 2 = SILVER AWARD. Once students receive 10 Bronze Awards for their continued efforts, they will be presented at their Year Assembly with a Silver Award. This award may be issued for exemplary conduct, school service and academic success.
Tier 3 = GOLD AWARD. This award is granted to students who have been successful in receiving 3 Silver Awards and will be presented at their Year Assembly along with a $5 canteen voucher and recognition in our schools newsletter.

There is also a chance for further recognition at the end of each semester and the end of the school year. Top ranked students at the end of each semester will be invited to attend a celebratory morning tea with the School Principal, Mr. Berry and come the end of the year, the top 5 students of each year group will be presented with a Marsden High School medallion.

Take advantage of our after school workshops, master strategies to strengthen your study skills, build your knowledge and develop your confidence in the classroom.

Workshops will operate after school each Monday commencing Feb. 20 and will run for approximately 30 mins. STYMIE is coming to Marsden High School in 2017

Rachel Downie, the creator of Stymie (Anti-bullying Notification System) is coming to present to all Marsden High School students and staff on Wednesday 22nd February. Rachel is passionate about supporting students who are being bullied and has setup Stymie to offer a safe way to notify someone about bullying and to seek help. Rachel has kindly offered to present a parents information session and we would like to extend an invitation to all parents to attend. This session with run from 4:30pm - 5:30pm in the school hall.

Stymie was developed with consideration for the Australian Safe Schools Framework, as well as the recommendations of the Australian Covert Bullying Prevalence Society. Stymie allows bystanders to send anonymous notifications to our school, about someone who they believe is being bullied or harmed. This notification allows you to upload evidence, such as screen shots of social media posts and discussions, text messages or instant message conversations to help outline an incident. The school then receives this Stymie notification via an encrypted, anonymous and confidential email which can then be appropriately actioned by the school. It is important to note that Stymie does not store any information, it is merely the conduit through which the information travels.

Most Likely to Succeed Film Screening

This month, Marsden High School will be hosting a screening of the acclaimed edu-documentary 'Most Likely to Succeed' and we would like to extend an invitation to all parents of Marsden students, as well as all parents within our local primary schools network to join us.

This film takes an important look at the education system and how one high school in California challenges this system and leads the charge towards ' a new era of education innovation'. The film aims to help all schools re-imagine their purpose and create learning experiences that prepare your children for life in the 21st century.

The new furniture in the Library is looking fabulous and all students and staff are in agreement that it is very comfortable - make sure you stop by and try it out! There is still more planned to do but the painting of the mezzanine area is now complete and the quotes are on the way for our new shelving.

Marsden High School Robotics

Robotics at Marsden High School:

Robotics is one of Marsden High Schools signature programs; it provides a highly engaging medium for creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and communication, four essential skills for learning and ICT within a curriculum context.

Students from Years 9-12 will meet once per week after school in our Robotics/Technology room, whilst our Year 7 & 8 students meet one lunchtime per week to work on Lego Robotics, where our Year 8 students mentor Year 7.

Since 2015 FRC have been holding an International/Regional Robotics competition at Sydney Olympic Park, which Marsden has been competing in and this competition attracts teams from all over Australia and Asia.

In 2016 our robotics team competed in both the Sydney and Hawaiian Regional events. With our talented robotics team and robust robot, we managed to place 2nd in both events. The game in 2016 was called Stronghold.

This year the game is called STEAM WORKS and will see our robotics team participate in two Regional events in Sydney. YEAR 10

All Year 10 students are encouraged to begin applying for Work Experience for June 26^th to 30^th. More information on the Work Experience Program will be provided during Senior Preparation lessons.
Any Year 10 student interested in experiencing TAFE should apply for a TAFE Taster course. These are short courses than run once a week for 8 weeks. Students should check the list of available courses outside the Careers office and see Mr Lustica or Mrs Hart to apply.

YEAR 11

TAFE placements will be announced during Week 4 and classes will start on February 21^st.
Mr Lustica will arrange a meeting with all TAFE students during Week 4 to outline expectations and procedures for each course and campus.

YEAR 12

Are reminded to see Mr Lustica or Mrs Hart if you have not yet gained access to the Careers Page on Google Classroom.
New TAFE placements will be announced during Week 4. Classes will commence on February 21^st.

2017 Year 7 Great Aussie Bush Camp, Tea Gardens.

By now all Year 7 students should have received their permission notes regarding the upcoming Year 7 Great Aussie Bush Camp. The aim of this camp is to "provide students with the opportunity to begin developing friendships whilst learning about respect and conflict resolution that will support and guide them throughout life". It is for that reason, we encourage as many students as possible to attend this exciting camp.

If you would like your child to attend, please complete and return the permission note, along with the $65 deposit to the school office by Wednesday Feb 8, 2017 at the latest. This will secure your child's spot and allow the organising teachers to finalise numbers and calculate the final cost. If your child is unable to attend or you need to discuss any payment issues please contact Miss. Soutter in PDHPE as soon as possible.

We are very much looking forward to this years Great Aussie Bush Camp and are sure each of our Year 7 students will have a great time and love the adventure.

Homework Hub is Back!

After great success in 2016, we are proud to announce that Homework Hub is Back!

Homework Hub is a great opportunity for your child to ensure their homework is complete, that they keep up-to-date study notes and has a chance to revise for exams or work on assessment tasks.

These sessions will run on Thursday afternoons starting with afternoon tea at 3:15pm, thanks to the school canteen. From here students will proceed to their allocated classroom to commence working on homework of their choice until 4:30pm.

It is likely that Homework Hub will expand into two classrooms this year, in which case, we will form groups for Years 7-9 and Years 10-12. Please be assured that both classrooms will be supervised by teachers.

As mentioned, last year was a great success and as the initiative progressed it became much more than just Homework Hub. Our teachers saw students working together and helping each other across different classes and year groups and witnessed new friendships being formed. Both students and teachers looked forward to Homework Hub each week and are looking forward to its return this year.

If you would like more information regarding this initiative, please contact Kara Tambree in the PDHPE staffroom. If you would like your child to participate please complete and return the permission note that was sent home to the PDHPE staffroom.

Deidre's speech was both inspirational and witty and very well received by students, staff and parents alike.

Uniform Update

Our new senior uniform will be introduced in Term 1, 2017. The uniform shop is currently stocked with most items of the uniform, however we have experienced a delay in receiving the new senior shirts and will notify you as soon as these become available.

Although the uniform remains unchanged for Years 7-10, please note a correction to the uniform. We previously communicated that students can wear either black or white socks, however the correct socks going forward are to be black. We apologise for the miscommunication and for any inconvenience caused. We have agreed upon black socks to maintain a consistent look to our school uniform.

Please ensure your child also wears the correct shoes to school. As in the past, the correct school shoes for Marsden High School are black, leather lace-up shoes with a hard sole. They are not suede and do not have logos on them. This is not just a uniform requirement, but also a safety issue, especially during TAS and Science classes.

Overall, the uniform has been worn well by our students throughout 2016 and we wish for this excellent presentation of our students and our school to continue in 2017.

HSC Success at Marsden

HSC Results are in...

It is with great pleasure we received our HSC results today. Marsden High School's 2016 Year 12 cohort have achieved outstanding results reflecting their maturity, planning, organisation and emotional intelligence. We received Band 6 results in most subjects and are particularly pleased at the results being 10% improvement on the previous year. For a comprehensive, local high school with a diverse enrolment these results speak volumes of the hard work put in by both students and teachers. I want to thank teachers and parents for their support shown to our students - all their hard work has paid off.

In general:

9% of the individual results were Band 6 (90 – 100)
23% of the individual results were Band 5 (80 – 89)
33% of the individual results were Band 4 (70 – 79)

Realistically, these results detail that 65% of student's individual results were Band 4 or more in the HSC subjects. 27% of student's individual results were Band 3 and less than 8% of individual results were bands 1 and 2. These results are amazing and we are delighted with our students' achievements.

We are especially proud of our students who scored high ATAR's thus opening up plenty of university options. Our dux of 2016 is Ana C., pictured above, who received an ATAR of 98.8 and 3 Band 6 results seeing her make the NSW Top Achievers and Distinguished Achievers lists. Ana was closely followed by Alexis K. who received an ATAR of 96.5.

We look forward to welcoming our new year 7 students with a brief student only assembly, in the John Hagen Hall at 8:55am (normal roll call time) on Monday 30^th January 2017.

All students are expected to be in full Marsden High School uniform and have with them their morning tea, lunch, drink, pen and note pad (do not bring full stationery requirements on this day). During this assembly, roll call will be conducted and students will receive their timetable and diaries.

If you are collecting your child from school, please pre-arrange where they should meet you after the end of day bell rings at 3:15pm.

Year 9 Peer Support

Last week, Year 9 students undertook 2 days of leadership training with help from some of our outstanding Year 10 students, who stepped up to the role of session leaders in preparation of becoming Peer Support Leaders in 2017. These new leaders will help Year 7 (2017) settle into student life at Marsden High School. Students were introduced to topics such as what makes a good leader, they were taken through some guided meditations with Mr. O'Brien and took part in some physical activities which they can utilise with the incoming Year 7 class.

These two days combined fun activities with new and important leadership skills. Students were randomly arranged into groups so that they could experience life as a Year 7 student. This allowed the students to develop empathy for Year 7 as well as giving them the opportunity to build stronger bonds with their peers. Students who successfully completed this training course were the proud recipients of a Leadership Certificate in recognition of their newly acquired skills.

We would like to thank all the teachers involved in this leadership program: Mrs Sharma, Mr Quelch, Mr O'Brien and Mr Lam.

News From the Library

The Marsden High School Library has recently undergone a refurbishment with many changes taking place over the course of Term 4. A significant amount of planning and effort has gone into these changes, most of which are not always visible to students using this facility.

The completion of Stage 1 is ongoing, however visible changes are now happening. We have now cleared the downstairs floor space, improving the use of the resource area. We also reconfigured this space, making room for the arrival of new furniture and creation of specific and flexible learning spaces throughout. These may seem like small changes, however they are important and necessary. This reconfiguration allows for a fresh new approach to teaching and Learning, "as our classrooms adopt changing technologies, teaching techniques are evolving and these prototyped classrooms are being used by teachers to test these new ways of engaging students." (Adrian Piccoli).

Our new learning spaces will give students access to 30 new laptops for period to period borrowing within the library, enabling students to work on assignments, homework and other projects at school with WiFi enabled printers available for printing purposes. These changes also now allow students direct access to the Learning Support Hub.

The Marsden High School Library is proudly a Next Generation Learning Space with an abundance of new resources. We continue to grow our extensive collection of non-fiction and reference books, the latest fiction, graphic novels, as well as a wide variety of magazines for student recreational reading and learning.

We look forward to the next stage of our refurbishment unfolding and will keep you informed as we continue to move forward. We would like to say a very big thank you to our Teacher Librarian Ms. Langelaar and Library Assistant Mrs. Knight for all their effort during the library upgrade.

The NEW senior girls skirts and boys trousers are NOW available for purchase from the Uniform Shop.

Students will continue to wear the current shirt/blouse until the new senior shirt/blouse arrives. This new uniform will be compulsory for the 2017 Year 11 Class, whilst it is optional for the 2017 Year 12 Class.

Australian Business Week

Week 8, Term 4, otherwise known as Australian Business Week saw our Year 10 students don their business hats ready to dive into the real and virtual worlds of business management. The students were well and truly inspired and duly developed meaningful business and life skills.

Small business groups were formed where each student stepped up to various management roles in a collaborative setting to create and run a virtual small cafe` business within a competitive marketplace. They were then tasked with the responsibility of controlling operations, finances, marketing, product/service development and much more. The results were outstanding.

We saw these companies develop ideas from the ground up, strategising. leading and responding. Creativity flowed and was brought to life through graphic artworks, video presentations, cocktail umbrellas and even suits and heels. This invaluable opportunity allowed Year 10 to develop an understanding for business concepts, problem solving and mathematical application whilst working to improve their communication and collaborative skills, their critical and creative thinking abilities and an understanding of their role in the greater community and perhaps even set them on the path to their future career.

Congratulations go out to all students, especially the overall winners 'Bean There, Done That' lead by CEO Nic H. and the following category winners; 'Le Chateau' winners of our Simulation Programme, lead by Maddy L and 'Lights, Camera, Coffee' led by Zane M.

Overall Australian Business Week was a great success and those who attended the Trade Fair were not only lucky enough to endulge in some tasty treats, but also had the privilege of witnessing first hand the result of hard work and seeing setbacks being transformed into success. Marsden High School is proud of all participants, their achievements and efforts throughout the week.

Thank you to all of the staff, to Mrs. Swinkels and Ms. Sharma for co-ordinating this massive week and to P&C members - Mr. Low and Ms. Travis for assisting us all throughout this massive event.

Pinnacle Students Control Robot 1400km Away

Year 7 Pinnacle Science

From their classroom here at school, Year 7 Pinnacle Science students took control of a robot nearly 1400km away in Adelaide, interacting with the presenter, activating and moving the robot. This activity was designed to demonstrate the real applications of energy conservation and its benefits to our planet. It was mind blowing observing our students exploit software and technology in order to control this robot.

We look forward to 2017 which will provide us with many more exciting STEM experiences, so stayed tuned to see what else our students get up to.

We would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to the Marsden High School STEM Team for their valuable suggestions, feedback and immense amount of hard work and dedication to this project.

STEM to Take Off in 2017

Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM)

2017 will bring with it the formation of STEM Classes for our Year 8 students. STEM Classes are an opportunity for students to work diligently and collaboratively on problem based activities with real world applications. Year 8 will utilise their problem solving, critical thinking, digital literacy and other 21^st Century learning skills to work on a range of tasks across Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

Our STEM Team was recently afforded the opportunity to join a select number of schools in a STEM Partnership Program with the University of Sydney. This enabled the team to attend a three-day STEM Enrichment Program as well as an upcoming session in 2017.

The MHS STEM Team is very grateful for the opportunity to work with the university on this project as well as for their guidance and support. We are excited to be working with our mentor, Stewart Palmer. Stewart, along with Riverside Girls HS will be working interdependently with MHS as both schools commence STEM Classes.

In the meantime, our students were given a taste of what they can achieve through STEM Classes with a visit from Year 5 student Michael Z. Michael is a student from Adelaide and finalist in the Youth Explorers ICT National Finals. He took the time to showcase his personal STEM Project, a Nursing Home Call Bell System for which he was awarded 3^rd Prize. Michael is a very impressive student and truly inspired our own students, who are eagerly anticipating the commencement of their classes.

The Race Around Marsden: Student Report

Last Thursday on the 8th of December, Marsden High School's Year 7 and 8 Pinnacle Classes participated in 'The Race Around Marsden'. This idea was taken from the American television show 'The Amazing Race'. We participated in many challenges and problem solving questions. As we were in teams, we learnt and practised team building skills with people who we normally wouldn't interact with. As well as using 21st century technology to figure out and solve those interesting and detailed problems/questions.

In my opinion 'The Race Around Marsden' was a team building, competitive and fun day. Thank you to all the teachers that planned and supported this day.

Marsden High School Takes the Oath

'I swear never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women. This is my oath'

This week Marsden High School students and staff took part in White Ribbon Day events across the school, to raise awareness and understanding of both domestic violence and violence against women.

Our week kicked off with a formal assembly organised by the 2017 Prefecture Leadership Team (PLT), where they invited Police Youth Liaison Officer, Senior Constable Deb Chrystal to address the school on the importance of understanding domestic violence and violence against women, knowing your role and rights and finding your voice. The PLT also prepared a video presentation calling attention to White Ribbon Day and the need to be informed. Throughout the course of the week, students and staff heard from a number of guest speakers, while the PLT held group mentor sessions to students across all year groups. These mentoring groups set out to reiterate the importance of awareness and understanding around these forms of violence and highlight the significance of White Ribbon Day. To end the week, students had the opportunity to enjoy school band performances and a BBQ and cake stall hosted by the PLT whilst signing their pledge. This final event was an enjoyable way to echo the statements and lessons learnt from all of our esteemed guests.

Through these experiences we learnt that 1 in 5 Australian women had experienced sexual violence, 1 in 6 had experienced physical or sexual violence either by a former or current partner, while 1 in 4 Australian women had experienced emotional abuse by a partner. We also learnt that this violence is not limited to women and that 1 in 19 Australian men had experienced either sexual or physical abuse by a former or current partner and that it is 3 times more likely that a person who had experienced such violence was the victim of a man.*

Violence against Women is defined as "any act of gender based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women" ** and Domestic Violence refers to the violence, abuse and intimidation of a person within an intimate relationship or family unit. This violence takes many forms, be it physical, emotional, sexual, verbal, financial, psychological or even isolating a victim from their friends, family and religious organisation.

The most important thing taken away from our week long look at Domestic Violence and Violence against Women is that, we have a voice. We can 'Stand Up, Speak Out, Act'***

Orientation Day 2016

On Tuesday 6th December MHS hosted Orientation Day to welcome all the students joining us for Year 7 in 2017. The day was a massive success and showcased all the amazing talent Marsden has to offer. The day kicked off with an assembly in the hall, where the students learnt about the opportunities that awaited them, listened to an incredible performance by Leo and heard the experiences of two of Marsden's current Year 7 students, Syrenity and William. The students were then in the audience for a uniform parade and impressive dance performance. As the assembly wrapped up, it was time for the students of 2017 to take part in a morning tea and a tour of Marsden High School. This was an interactive tour, where students completed a variety of activities across the school and discovered what makes life at Marsden so special. A huge thanks to all the Marsden staff and students who helped make the day such a success!

2016 Marsden High School Sports Assembly

Yesterday saw Marsden High School's PDPHE faculty, together with Sports Captains, Sarah and Jordan host the 2016 MHS Sports Assembly, where they paid tribute to the best of our school's sporting talent. Many medals and trophies for both team and individual sporting success were handed out to very deserving recipients, with the most notable being the 2016 Sports Persons of the Year. This year MHS celebrated the sporting achievements of Angela W. and Ethan G., both of whom had a very impressive year of sport.

Angela was crowned Table Tennis Australia's Junior Champion, where she took home 5 gold medals across multiple age groups and in both singles and doubles tournaments. Unfortunately Angela was unable to join us in receiving her trophy, as she is currently in China attending a Table Tennis Training Camp.

Ethan demonstrated his talent across a diverse range of sports. Ethan represented Volleyball Australia in the U16's, was a part of the Elite Cricket Camp held at the Sydney Cricket Ground, a CHS High Jump representative as well as the Zone Athletics Age Champion.

Special mention also goes to William S., who was Age Champion at all 3 major carnivals – swimming, athletics and cross country.

Not only were accolades handed out for outstanding sporting achievement for both team and individual sports players, but we also inducted the new house captains for 2017, awarded Bradman as the house with the most points for 2016 (closely followed by Cuthbert). We also recognized Mrs. Watson for School Service to Sport and Mr. Lustica as Coach of the Year. Sarah T. accompanied by pianist Mr. Lechmadry, also treated students to a beautiful vocal performance.

To conclude the event, students were given the opportunity to review their year of sport, by viewing videos and photos capturing all the highlights from the Athletics, Swimming and Cross Country Carnivals along with footage from a range of Grade Sport matches.

This years Sports Assembly was a great success and once again we would like to congratulate not only the recipients of our sports awards but all students for their hard work and dedication to sport. It is important to also note that these achievements would not be possible with out the amazing efforts of our staff and coaches and wider community.

NOTICE TO ALL PARENTS/CAREGIVERS AND STUDENTS

The NSW Teachers Federation has announced it will hold a stop work meeting of school teachers and non-school based Teaching Service (OCAA) members on Thursday 8 December 2016. The purpose of the stop work meeting is for Federation members to debate and vote on the proposed Crown Employees (Teachers in Schools and Related Employees) Salaries and Conditions Award 2016.

As a number of staff will be supporting this stop work meeting, normal lessons will not commence until 10:10am. However, the school will be open and provide minimal supervision for students present.

Students who arrive at school at the usual time are to go to the Quadrangle at 8:55am. Staff will then direct students to learning spaces.

All students are expected to attend school on Thursday and arrive at school by 10:00am ready to resume their studies.

Important Note:

All scheduled assessment takes and excursions on 8 December 2016 will go ahead as normal.

Marsden High School Dancers Treated to a Masterclass with Paulie from Justice Crew.

Last week the Marsden High School dancers were privileged to be able host the very talented singer, dancer and musician Paulie Merciadez from Justice Crew. The students participated in a 2hr long dance workshop where they were given a masterclass in hip hop, popping and locking. The students were also lucky enough to witness a private performance by Paulie and engage in a Meet & Greet session.

We would like to say a huge thank you to Paulie and Justice Crew for teaching and inspiring our already incredible dance talent. We would also like to thank Miss. Bugeja for organising this workshop and for her tireless effort with our dancers.

It is widely understood that technology plays a integral role in student learning and engagement and gives students access to new ways of learning and interacting within the classroom. Last night saw Marsden High School host the families of our incoming 2017 Year 7 students at our Transition Information Evening. There was a lot of excitement around starting high school and of course a lot of valuable information being dispensed. We wanted to take this opportunity to remind you that Marsden High School is dedicated to getting wellbeing right and engaging our students to achieve and succeed. We know that the first step in doing so, is to ensure a smooth transition from primary school to high school. We want your children to feel supported at this time of change, as such we have developed a Transition Plan and put together presentations on Success in High School - Raising Teenagers and Getting Settled at Marsden all of which are available on our website for you to review. Dear Parents/Carers,

We are looking forward to our new Year 7 2017 students experiencing a normal day at high school. They will experience a variety of subjects and this is a time for these students to familirise themselves with the layout of Marsden High School and meet some of their teachers for next year.

Please drop your son/daughter at the front of Marsden High School where the Flag Poles are located at approx 9.00- 9.10am.

Our Marsden High School students will then take the new Year 7 2017 students to the School Library where their names will marked off and then they will receive their name tags.

They will then proceed to their first class which will commence at 9.30am.

What to bring:-

Recess and a drink

Lunch will be provided - This will be a BBQ lunch . (Halal sausages will also be provided). Students to bring their own lunch if they are unable to have the BBQ lunch.

Success in Year 12 is very dependent on a student's attitude towards their school work and the school community. At Marsden High School there are expectations and responsibilities that students must have towards themselves, peers, school and the wider community. Marsden High School values the mature, respectful and responsible conduct and attitude of its senior students. These values and expectations were made clear to the new Year 12 cohort at a Year Assembly on Year 12's return to school this term by Mr Berry (Principal) and Ms Bernyk (Year Advisor). 9.30am – 11.30pm Thursday October 13^th 2016^_Marsden Targeted Transition program to support students with anxiety/emotional/ social issues where a smaller group environment will ease them into high school. Ms Pam Howes is our co-ordinating teacher of this program, please ring Ms Pam Howes on the school number if you feel your child would benefit from this extra support.
9.10am – 2.30pm Thursday October 20^th 2016 – Welcome to High School day Year 6 into Year 7. Students will be placed in classes and experience a "normal" day at high school where a variety of subjects are on offer. More details will be forwarded towards the end of this term.
6.30 pm – 7.30pm Monday 28^th November 2016 – Settling into High School parent information session in our school library. There will also be a session
for the Pinnacle Program – Gifted and Talented session will be between 5.45pm - 6.30pm

Tuesday 6^th December 2016 Orientation Day – state wide event for incoming Year 7 students. The importance of Work Experience

How good are our Marsden students - the importance of Work Experience cannot be under estimated:

Work Experience plays a large role in preparing students to understand career options and choices post school. The current generation of students are expected to go through about fourteen different career choices in their lifetime and schools are required to prepare them with the creative and innovative thinking skills required for success in the C21st.

Marsden's two Career Adviser, Mrs Hart and Mrs Hooper have utilised their experience and brilliantly provided students with many options. During Week 9 Term 2 the vast majority of Year 10 students opted for Work Experience. One local large international company, ORIX gave five of our students the fantastic opportunity to do work experience. The students were rotated through the areas of Finance, IT, Customer Service, Operations Management and General Business gaining the experience of how each section was linked to the others.

The reviews of our students from the Executive Assistant and her staff, including General Managers of each department, were incredibly supportive of the opportunities we are delivering at Marsden. The students were equally excited and enthusiastic about their time at the company and all of the amazing learning and social experiences they had whilst there. Most telling of all was how completely different their understanding of corporate business was compared to the idea of an 'office job' prior to their work experience placement. The five students were Elijah Atienza, Vincent Chu, Jack Wu, Sean Tran and Nic Hose. Several of the students demonstrated their appreciation by buying gifts of chocolates and doughnuts to thank their supervising teams.

One student the Executive Assistance (EA) detailed to Mrs Hooper in an email of gratitude was described on Thursday as being 'painfully shy' in nature but was completely in awe of his computer skills. Due to the student's shyness, the EA wasn't sure if he was actually enjoying the experience, but she needn't have worried as she describes on his last day, the student ‘brought in boxes of chocolates for the team supervising him the most and an individual thank you card each for each of us. Within each card was written things relevant to each of the team, some with direct quotes of things which had been said to him during the week. The cards were funny and heartfelt'. The EA added ‘He was also able to thank me verbally on behalf of himself and the school for the opportunity given to come here. I know how hard that would have been for him. I told him it's been like watching a flower open, day by day this week as he has become more comfortable. We all truly hope that he can continue to come out of his shell' … ‘The school should be proud of these young men. They have charmed us all and impressed us with their intellect and maturity'.

Reptile Visit

Would you like to lick a cane toad? Have you ever held an alligator? Wondered how heavy a Burmese Python is? All these questions were answered at the reptile show held recently at Marsden High School.

The presenter, Mr. Michael Tate, was enthusiastic, engaging, funny and loved reptiles. He offered some wise advise in handling reptiles; never touch any of the reptiles on the head and never stand in front of an alligator. This was timely advice as the specimens included a giant Lace Monitor Lizard, an albino snake, a cane toad, a Bearded Dragon, a Burmese Python, and an alligator.

The instructor also explained a little about the evolution of vertebrates and the sad extinction of many frogs in the Sydney Basin. His reference to the extinction of the Gastric Brooding Frog was very relevant as the Sydney Morning Herald recently described attempts by scientists to clone this frog using genetic engineering techniques.

Azmin Behjani had the chance to nurse numerous reptiles and broke the ice through his heroic deeds. The toughest task, apart from licking the cane toad, which was performed by Michael Tate, was carried out by Sandy Nguyen (the nursing of a 2-3 m alligator) and Niayesh Jalili (the nursing of the giant Burmese Python).

The session ended with numerous reptiles being allowed to roam the floor of the school hall. This allowed all of Year 7 and Year 8 to interact closely with the reptiles.

Science Scene

Science Scene

Frances Bodkin is Aboriginal and is D'harawal elder who has explored indigenous knowledge systems for many years and has a Masters of Environmental Science from Macquarie University. Fran studied botany, biology, climatology, marine sciences, palaeontology & geology at University. She shared her ecological wisdom and taught numerous groups in her capacity an indigenous educator.

Frances Bodkin studied Science to confirm that Aboriginal knowledge of Science was indeed Science. There are four components in Science- observation, experience, measurement and experiment. The first two components were part of Aboriginal Science. Observations and experiences were recorded and stored in stories. Today's modern Science comprises of the latter two. By joining Modern Science with Aboriginal Science, she was able to perceive the science of the environment and the earth as a living entity.

She combined her formidable knowledge of D'harawal creation, history and law to teach Year 7 and 8 students about the native plants in the Marsden school environment on Tuesday, 2 April, 2013. The students were thoroughly engaged and enjoyed walking around the school ground (especially the bush regeneration area) to deepen their knowledge and awareness of indigenous uses of native plants.

In Term 2, 2013 students in Year 11 at Marsden High School will be involved in a course called Crossroads. Crossroads is a Stage 6 course which extends the learning experiences of students inYears 7-10 in Personal Development, Health and Physical Education.

The Crossroads course is mandatory in NSW government schools and it is a compulsory area of study for all NSW senior students.There is no formal assessment or examination for this course.Crossroads aims to support senior students as they address issues related to identity, independence and the changing responsibilities they face. In Crossroads, students have the opportunity to develop knowledge, understandings and skills to enable them to make informed decisions about issues which are pertinent to them.The course is divided into two focus areas: Working at relationships and Drug issues.

This year we have engaged the services of Ian Bradburn fromOptimum Experiences Outdoor Adventures. Ian and his team will present 3 exhilarating days of team-building, inter-active leadership and experiential activities of personal growth. This will take place at beautiful Jamberoo Valley Lodge on the South Coast of NSW. They will be using a range of equipment and activities that will challenge our students both physically and mentally whilst developing skills in team cohesion, communication, cooperation, negotiation, problem solving, strategic planning, decision making and leadership. The sessions are presented with a focus on fun, safety and a ‘challenge by choice' theme. PDHPE staff will present engaging worshops and presentations around drug use.

Talented Sports Program

The Talented Sports Program (TSP) is an extra curricular opportunity for students who would like to combine excellence in sport with their academic studies. The program is designed to improve both academic and sports performance of students. Thus far we have enrolled almost 40 boys and 30 girls from across the school.

Students in this program will regularly train under the supervision of their school coaches and professional coaches from appropriate sporting organistions at regular intervals. Part of the program will also involve the development of a PLP or a perosnal learning plan that will be developed in consultation with Learning Suppoprt staff.

The TSP is well under way and some positive results have already been achieved. Our U/15's boys, opens boys and girls touch football teams all comprehensivley defeated Leichhardt last Tuesday at Birchgrove Oval. Our mixed Volleyball team were also victorious.

Upcoming matches include trials against St Joseph's and Hills Brumbies FC.

Marsden High School celebrates National Recognition Week for all School Administrative and Support Staff

All this week students, parents and staff at Marsden High School will acknowledge the hard work done by School Administrative and Support Staff (SAS Staff) as part of National Recognition Week.

National Recognition Week runs from Monday the 3^rdto Friday 7^thSeptember. This year's theme is "Our Jobs Support Education."

Every day of the school year SAS Staff face new challenges in the running of our public schools and the provision of the quality education which our children will need for life in the 21^stcentury. They are constantly adapting to change so that our children can have the best education possible.

Public Service Association President Sue Walsh, said "This is the twelfth year the Association has organised the celebrations for Recognition Week for SAS Staff."

"SAS Staff are a dedicated group of professional workers who are often overlooked in the school setting. Recognition Week gives the whole school the opportunity to demonstrate to SAS Staff that they are valued members of the school community" Ms Walsh said.

SAS Staff at Marsden High School play a vital role in students' learning by assisting teachers with implementing educational programs, maintaining records and assisting in producing newsletters, and maintaining the grounds to keep our school safe.

Learning Today Shaping Tomorrow (Draft Ideas)Marsden is one of the 229 schools that is part of the empowered National initiative and we have begun to create the vision of what we want our school to be for the future and to meet all the needs of our students. Building our Aboriginal Australia with a great Aboriginal Language Initiative at Marsden High.

All our year students are learning the aboriginal language Dhurag, taught by an Dhurag woman called Jacinta Tobin. Marsden High School sought permission from the traditional owners of the language through the traditional smoke ceremony and celebration of Aboriginal culture. The assembly was a spiritual experience in which the entire school came together in the traditional ceremony to ensure the best spirit is with our learners. The traditional smoking ceremony was conducted by Aboriginal Elder Uncle Wes and Jacinta Tobin a Dhurag sang a traditional Aboriginal Women song to bless the learning of Aboriginal language at Marsden. The assembly was a significant event in the calendar of Marsden High School and the support of the Ryde AECG (Aboriginal Educational Consultative Group) is highly appreciated by entire school community.

This year our SRC is 53 students strong. With five members from year 7 through to 15 in year 12, we're all keeping busy with our fundraising, recycling projects and our BIG project for this term - Marsfest.

Marsden High School comprises a diverse multicultural student and staff population with cultural descendants of Europe, the Middle-East, The Pacific Islands, The Asian countries, Africa and our Australia.

Though we celebrate our diversity every day through our friendships and education, we formally gathered in our hall on June 14^th, 2012 to rejoice in multicultural performances and there-after, share foods from various cultures.

The Honorary Victor Dominello, MP, also a very significant member of the Australian community who fights to support and protect the rights and welfare of Aussies, will be opening our multicultural celebrations for the day. The Hon. Victor Dominello has time and again shown support to Marsden students by providing opportunities for our prefect body to visit Parliament House and learn about some of the skills and resilience members of Parliament must exercise, while keeping their purpose and heart true.

Crossroads is a mandatory Stage 6 course which extends the learning experiences of students in Years 7-10 in Personal Development, Health and Physical Education. Schools are required to deliver a 25 hour course in Personal Development and Health in Year 11 with an emphasis on drug and HIV/AIDS education issues.

Crossroads aims to support senior students as they address issues related to identity, independence and the changing responsibilities they face. In Crossroads, students have the opportunity to develop knowledge, understandings and skills to enable them to make informed decisions about issues which are pertinent to them. For some senior students, the school context may be the only forum for them to explore and discuss these issues.

Marsden High School will be running the Crossroads course through a camp setting where students will be engaged in learning experiences aligned with the major aims of the course. Students are strongly encouraged to attend the camp as it offers new learning experiences and practical application of theoretical knowledge and skills learnt.

Year 9 Laptop Information Evening

Parents, carers and students of Year 9 are invited to an information session about the school laptops.

Custom-made for school use, the laptops are robust, compact and lightweight, and fit easily in a school bag. They come fully loaded with a range of leading software and learning applications.

The laptops are wireless enabled so students can connect to the school network and the internet in and around school grounds.

If you have the internet at home, your child can also connect to school and the internet form home.

At the information session we will give you more information about the laptops, screen a very short video and answer any of your questions.

Students will return the Laptop Users Charter signed. Students and parents/carers will be issued with their laptop that evening.

Those students who do not return their Laptop Users Charter will not receive their laptops that evening. The laptop set up process will take place during class over the next week.

Marsden joins Zone Grade Sport Competition for 2012

It has been over 10 years since Marsden was part of the grade sport competition and in 2012 we are back!

After consultation with students, parents and the P&C, Mr King, Mr Lustica and Ms Lofts worked hard on developing a proposal to present to the Zone sports committee to allow Marsden to join the competition in 2012.

Beginning next year, Marsden will enter teams into the Senior competition on Tuesday afternoons. Year 10 students will have priority selection in teams, followed by Year 11 and 12 students who have an option of playing if selected. It is possible that expansion into younger year groups may occur in future years, however this will be decided upon after the evaluation of next years competition.

Sports available for 2012 will be announced after the Zone AGM decides the make up of the competition on the 25th November. Once announced, team trials will be held.

All students aspiring to represent Marsden in this competition will be expected to uphold the values and traditions of Marsden High School, display a commitment to their schooling and will be required to attend regular training sessions. Students will be selected on these characteristics as well as ability.

A grade sport fee will be required each term to cover the costs associated with transport. Currently, this is estimated at $50 and may change based on the number of teams entered into the competition.

Travelling to and from school in a safe manner

Over the last month we are concerned regarding safety of our students walking though the petrol garage on Victoria Road on their way home from school. This is very unsafe. Students must use the pathways to get to the bus stops.

Students will not be served at either McDonalds or the Garage after 8.50am in the mornings, as our students are to arrive to school on time at 8.55am

Please discuss this with your child and encourage safe and responsible behaviour when travelling to and from school.

Lithgow Sport & Recreation Camp

Year 11 students were fortunate to be given the opportunity to participate in 10 day Sport and Rec Outdoor Recreation program TVET course endorsed by the board of studies. 20 students from Marsden High School enrolled to participate in the program.

On the 23^rd September 2011 we all met in the morning at Strathfield station. We travelled by train to Lithgow and met first leaders, Steve, Peta and Claire at Lithgow train station. The leaders took us back to Lithgow TAFE by bus where we packed the trailer and headed of to Lake Lyle campsite.

On the way to the campsite the trailers brakes broke which left us by the roadside while they tried to fix it. During this time George was patting local wildlife. The trailer was not able to be fixed so we had to travel back to the TAFE where we got pizza for dinner. Then the new trailer arrived and we all headed to the campsite setting up our tents in the dark. This was the start of our week long adventure.

First day at the campsite had all of us doing safety training to make sure we were prepared for all the activities for the week. Day 2 and 3 we had heavy rain during the activities. A lot of our belongings got wet. We were canoeing for most Day 4 in two person canoes with the highlight being 2 students capsizing the leaders in the first few minutes of being in the water. This day we were marked on our safety assessment and all passed.

Day 5 we met our new leaders Pepper and Tom where we did rock climbing attached to safety ropes as well as Day 6. Day 7 we did horizontal canyoning. We were wearing wetsuits and helmets while bushwalking and at times swimming in cold water. On Day 8 we bushwalked down to a canyon where we swam in a waterhole and all of us attempted the duckdive to the bottom of what they call ‘love heart' pool about 4 metres to the bottom to touch the rocky sandy bottom, it was freezing cold but we were all successful!

Day 9 we stayed at the campsite and packed up, Day 10 we headed back to Lithgow TAFE to unpack all the gear and then headed back to Sydney by Train. Overall a great camp, we had a great time and best of all we passed the course.

Dear Sir,

Last Thursday I was privileged to be invited, along with my Vice President Owen Bennett, to attend the Year 12 graduation at Marsden High School.

The whole ceremony was quite revealing as to the quality of young Australians living in our community. Some rare artistic talent was exhibited, first by Naomi Sommers in singing ‘Steer', and then by Amelia Park who without any reference to sheet music played piano pieces by Chopin and Bach.

The addresses by 2010 Dux Nimisha Kshatriya and guest speaker, former student Anna Wotton, dispelled any notion that students were disadvantaged by undertaking a comprehensive, public secondary education.

The outstanding academic, cultural and sporting achievements of Marsden High School are a credit to the teachers, parents as well as the students themselves and should also be embraced, with pride, by the wider community.

Study skills for October: Preparing for Senior Studies

As many senior students prepare to leave school at the end of this year and embark on further education or a new career, a whole batch of students are preparing to join the ranks of the senior students at their school next year.

As students approach the senior years, they are expected to start taking more responsibility for their own learning. For many students part of this is a realisation that they need to do their schoolwork for their own sake, to keep options open for their own future – so they start to work for themselves, not just because their teacher or parent says they have to. Other students come to realize that in order to cope with the increased workload in the senior years, they need to work more efficiently at home and in the classroom, small changes like changing who students sit next to can make a big difference to how much work is completed in class.

Inaugural Wizards vs Warriors

This year the PDHPE department have implemented a State of Origin style series using the current house format. Bradman and Cuthbert will combine to represent the Warrior's while Konrad and Young will join forces to represent the Wizards.

Once a year teachers from each house will combine their teams in a selection process to identify players who are worthy of being selected. Students will not only be selected on their athletic ability but their dedication to their team, leadership qualities, communication skills and sportsmanship.

Teams will be selected and announced during sport the week following trials. A team list will also be available to students outside the PDHPE staffroom.

A record of past performances and a history of records including results will be available on the schools website.

This years competition begins on Monday 19th September with Year 7 competing in mixed Netball with Year 8 playing Touch NRL on Tuesday 20th September.

After a fantastic program in 2010, where more than 7,600 schools participated, Coles is continuing its commitment to encouraging active, healthy lifestyles for Australian kids. Once again we've teamed up with our ambassador Cathy Freeman for Coles Sports for Schools 2011 program, providing quality fresh food for our Aussie families and sporting equipment for our Aussie schools.

Year 10 Subject Selection

Thank you to all those how have completed their subject selection. We are extending the time (Year 10) to submit your selections to Wednesday 17th August, 2011 11pm. Bring your signed parent selection form to the Careers advisor, Ms. Hart on Thursday 18th August. This extension is due to email problems.

Subject Selections for our Year 8 and Year 10 students are approaching fast.
On the 9th of August, there will be a special Subject Selection night held at Marsden to aid the students and their parents in their choices.
The teachers will be out in force with a 'market-style' approach to inform and intrigue the students and parents with the content of their subjects.

The program will be as follows:

6:00-6:45pm

§ Year 8 parents and students arrive and go to the Common room to receive important information.

§ Subject selection booklets handed out on arrival.

§ Welcome by Ms. Lofts.

§ Explanation of the nature of subject selections by Ms. Hart.

§ Explanation of the process by Mr. Tari.

6:45pm

§ Year 8 parents and students go to the Hall for Market night and marvel at the wonders of modern education!

§ Students and parents further investigate what subjects to choose and ask relative questions of teachers.

7:00pm

§ Year 10 parents and students arrive and are ‘ushered' to the Common Room.

§ Subject selection booklets are handed out on arrival.

§ Ms. Lofts welcomes parent and students.

§ Ms. Hart explains HSC, ATAR, Units, etc.

§ Mr. Tari explains process with demonstration.

§ TAFE representative talks about TAFE courses.

7:45pm

§ Year 10 parents and students proceed to the hall and are dazzled by the helpful, creative and informative teachers and their ‘stalls'.

§ Students and parents glean even more information from subject teachers.

8:30 - Night closes.

Thredbo Ski Trip

35 Students will accompany Ms Bernyk and Mr King to Thredbo ski resort on Sunday 31st July for three exhilerating days of skiing and snowboarding. Students will be required to meet at the front of school at 11.00am on Sunday and will return at approximately 10.30pm on Wednesday 3rd August.

Homework Club on Tuesdays

Marsden High endeavours to support all our students in their studies.

As a new initiative we are operating a Homework Club on Tuesday Afternoons from 2:15 to 3:30pm after the last period of the day (During the Meeting period) in our school Library. Instead of students going home to do homework, they can stay and gain some assistance by a qualified teacher to complete their homework and assignments.

Students are required to sign in at 2:15 pm and Sign out at 3:30 pm. Students are to remain in the library while the homework club is operating.

As the numbers grow, we will look toward having focus learning afternoons and workshops. Students in all years should take advantage of this outstanding opportunity.

Parent Teacher Night is on 2nd August 4;30 till 7;00pm.
